It's International Social Media Week and at the King's Centre small businesses are being given the chance to discover the secrets of social media and how it can boost contacts and customers. Left, Jim Drew from Business Revolution and Kathy Payne who gave up IT to run a homeopathy business at the Maddermarket. She's realised how useful Facebook and You Tube are!
Down at County Hall Jonathan Dunning from Unison and Ed Bober from the Norfolk Coalition Against Cuts were leafletting arriving staff on the morning that the County Council meet to set next years budget. They're hoping to influence the decision making progress.

The Dove Hilton at Old Costessey where Jill Burrage manages the brood of thrity white doves for "Wings Of Love" supplying them to wedddings, funerals and of course St.Valentine's. Here they are waiting to be called and Jill prepares one for flight!

Briston, Melton Constable and Foulsham are having thir power supply upgraded today so Captain Gaynor Mulryne of the Salvation Army has opened up their Briston centre which will have power, and will be serving tea's and coffee in a warm environment for anyone who wants to come along today. Fortunately we're not still in the freezing temperatures!

CPAD (Community Public Access Defibrillator)

Brundall Area Community First Responders invited me to cut the ribbon on the CPAD at Blofield United Football Club on Saturday. It's situated on the old Yarmouth Road in the village and will help when life is at risk from cardiac arrest. It's easy to use too! The voice incorporated gives step by step instructions when using it and one of the Brownies who came along showed that even a youngster can do it. Sorry the pictures can't be enlarged but thanks for sending them to me Christine!

I've lost count of the number of times this one's been sent in just lately!

The Government has issued a warning to anyone travelling in the icy conditions. You should take a shovel, blankets or sleeping bag, extra clothing including a scarf, hat and gloves, 24hrs supply of food, 5kg of rock salt, torch with spare batteries, road flares and reflective triangles, tow rope, 5 gallon petrol/diesel can, a first aid kit and jump leads.
I looked a complete fool on the bus this morning!

A young woman of limited intelligence came home from work to find her young son sitting on the doorstep clutching his stomach and being looked after by a concerned neighbour.
"Oh thank heavens you're home" said the neighbour. "Your little boy has swallowed your door key."
"Oh that's alright," replied the young woman, "I'll climb in through the window."

As a bagpiper I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at the graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends so it was a paupers funeral in the backwoods.
As I wasn't familiar with the place I got lost but eventually happened across the place an hour late. The funeral director had already gone, the hears was nowhere to be seen and only the grave diggers were left eating their lunch.
I felt bad about it and apologised for being late. Looking down into the grave with the coffin already covered with a layer of earth, I decided to play. The workers put down their lunches and I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family or friends. As I played Amazing Grace the workers began to weep and we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. With my head hung low my heart was full. As I opened the car door I heard one of the workers say, "I've never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

A couple go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order Chicken Surprise. The waiter brings the meal served in a dish fitted with a lid.
Just as the wife is about to serve herself, the lid on the dish rises slightly. Taken aback she see's two beady eyes looking around before the lid slams back down.
"Good grief, did you see that?" she cries to her husband. He hadn't seen what happened so she tells him to look for himself. As he reaches for the lid it again rises and he see's the eyes looking out from under it before the lid slams down shut again. He calls the waiter over and demands an explanation.
"Please sir," says the waiter, "what you order?"
The husband replies, "Chicken surprise."
"Ah! So sorry" says the waiter, "I bring you Peking Duck!"

Arthur is 90 years old. He's played golf every day since his retirement 25 years ago. One day he arrives home downcast.
"That's it", he tells his wife, "I'm giving up golf. My eyesight's so bad once I've hit the ball I can't see where it's gone."
His wife sympathises but thinks she has the solution. "Why don't you take my brother with you and give it one more try."
"That's no good," sighs Arthur. "Your brother's a hundred and three. He can't help."
"He may be a hundred and three but his eyesight's perfect." His wife offers.
So the very next day Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing and squints down the fairway. Turning to his brother-in-law he asks,"Did you see the ball?"
"Of course I did!" replies brother-in-law. "I have perfect eyesight."
"Well where did it go." demands Arthur.
The brother-in-law throws his arms in the air. "I don't know - I don't remember!"

A lorry driver pulls up at the red lights and a girl from the car behind jumps out and runs up to the cab.
"Hi, my name's Sharon and I just want to tell you that you're losing your load."
The lights change and they both drive off. At the next set of red lights she does the same telling him "You're losing part of your load."
At the third red light she again runs up to the cab. He lowers the window and she again says "my name's Sharon and I'm telling you you're losing your load.
By the forth set of red lights the lorry driver is out of the cab straight away and before Sharon can get out of her car he says, "Hi, my name's Kevin and I'm gritting the road."

Three boys are argueing over whose dad is the most easily frightened. One boy says his dad runs down the stairs just because there's a spider in the bath and his mother had to sort it out.
The second boy says that's a load of rubbish. His dad went camping and ran out of the tent with no clothes on because he saw an earwig and his mother had to sort that out.
The third boy exclaims that his dad is more frightened than both the others.
"When my mum was in hospital last week my dad was so frightened of being alone that the neighbour had to come round and sleep with him."

My wife's been missing for a week now. The Police came round and said I was to prepare for the worst, so I've been to the charity shop and got her clothes back just in case.

I was in the pub with my wife last night and I said "I love you."
She said,"Is that you or the beer talking?" I replied, "It's me talking to the beer!"

God looked down on two naked statues, Adam and Eve who for the last 100 years had been staring lovingly at each other across a park footpath. God told them that as a reward for never complaining he would give them the gift of life for one hour and they could do whatever they wanted in that time. He would turn a blind eye no matter what it was. So it came to pass and 55 minutes later they're lying on the grass in each others arms giggling. Eve said to Adam "come on we still have 5 minutes left so let's do it again but this time in a different way."
"OK " says Adam "I'm worn out but I'll give it a go. How do you want to do it this time?"
Eve replies,"Well, this time YOU hold the pidgeon and I'LL poop on its head!"

A florist went to the barber for a haircut. After the cut he asked for the bill but the barber replied that he was doing community service and couldn't accept any money. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning there was a 'thank you' card and a bunch of red roses at his door.
Later that day a policeman comes into the shop and has a haircut. Again the barber explains that, as he's doing community service, he can't charge for the cut. The cop was happy as he left the shop and the next day when the barber arrives to open up there's a lovely 'thank you' card and a dozen doughnuts on the doorstep.
The nxt day an MP comes in for a haircut and the barber obliges explaining that he can't charge for the cut as he's doing comminity services. The MP thanks him for his haircut and leaves without having to pay. The next morning when the barber comes to open his shop there's a dozen MP's waiting on his doorstep!

The back door was open and an old dog strayed in, jumped on the couch, went into a deep sleep for an hour or so then walked out again. This happened every couple of days for a few weeks so one day I put a note on his collar telling the owner where he went and what he did. The next time the dog arrived there was another note attached to his collar. It read "He's my dog, we live in a house with six childre, three hysterical women and two grumpy old men - can I come with him next time?"

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon so he placed four worms each in a separate jar.
The first worm was placed into alcohol, the second into a jar full of cigarette smoke, the third worm in chocolate syrup and the fourth into good clean soil.
At the conclusion of his sermon the minister observed to the congragation that the worm in alcohol was dead! The second worm in the cigarette smoke was DEAD! The third worm in chocolate syrup was DEAD! But the forth worm in good clean soil was still ALIVE!
"So," exclaimed the minister to the congregation. "What did you learn from this demonstration?"
Maxine, sitting at the back of the church stood up and in a loud voice exclaimed "As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate you WON'T get worms!"

A man starts his new job at the zoo and is given three tasks. The first job is to clear the exotic fish pool of weeds. As he's clearing them a huge fish jumps out of the water and bites his nose. The man beats off the fish and crushes it with his spade. Wanting to hide the evidence he throws the dead fish to the lions.
The second job is to clean out the chimp house. The chimps start to pelt him with cocnuts and lashing out with his spade he kills two of them. Again he has to dispose of the corpses so he throws them into the lion enclosure.
Moving on to the last job he has to collect the honet from the South American bee hives. As soon as he approaches he's attacked by the swarming bees and he thrashes about with his spade until every last one is dead. Sraping up the remains he flings them into the lion enclosure because lions will eat anything.
Later that day a new lion arrives at the zoo. He wanders into the lion enclosure and asks one of the resident lions "What's the food like here?"
The lion looks up at him and says, "Absolutely brilliant. Today we've had fish, chimps and mushy bees."

Luvly Lego

Grandaughter Grace just loves to play with her Lego. She has three buckets full now and while she stays with us often asks grandad to make her something. The theme this week has been flying so here's the helicopter that she insisted had to be pulled by her Lego train whilst grandad is putting the finishing touches to the plane that had to be flown by the cowboy! Ah! Little minds.

Mundesley Volunteer Coastguard is merging with Happisburgh VC in a move that will see them share a building in Bacton between the two. Sector Manager Bob Francis says that their old building is not suitable any more and the Happisburgh building is teetering on the edge of the cliffs!

TreasurerRoger Eastaugh and Chairman Martin Roberts at the Trafford Park ground in Wroxham. Wroxham football club want to go up a league but to do that the facailities have to be improved. They've the cash to do it but want volunteer help as well in order to meet the March deadline.

Eyewitness calls from two people who saw a large black cat ( a puma or panther) in the Colney Lane area on the edge of the city. I went to investigate and spoke to numerous people who pass this way every day but none of them had seen anything unusual. Looking at the snow covered bank I spotted these distinctive marks but were they made by a big cat?

Linda Laxton at British Wild Flower Plants based at Burlingham is just growing on a huge order for marram and lyme grass. In total 270,000 plants will be supplied to Sandhaven beach in South Shields. They'll be planted in the sand dunes where their root system will help to bind the dunes together and stabilise them.

At Cromer they've put aside £1m to strengthen the pier but there's another £10m coming to improve the sea defences too. Here's Andy Boyce from Cromer Preservation Society and cabinet member for coastal issues Angie Fitch Tillett. Naturally they're delighted although it'll be a year before everthing is ready to start. Just down the road, they were making improvements to the golf links at the Links Hotel West Runton when Darren Coopers digger unearthed a bomb! It took the Bomb Squad just a few minutes to identify it as a 2" smoke mortar from WWII. They took it away so no big detonation and for Director Marc McKenzie - no new bunker!!

Militia at Potters Holiday Resort

This was the first appearance of the East Norfolk Militia at Potters five star leisure resort. It was an indoor "Best Of British" market and as you can see we had some fun with Charlie Chaplin and others. The girls lined up in the terrace bar for a singalong with Johnny Cleveland whilst entertainer Mark Brewer literally took it on the chin with a custard pie dusted generously with paprika! Busby meanwhile lived up to his name with his uniform and that bearskin so we put him in the ranks! Our next appearance at the resort is in May.

After the 'old girl' died on me last week we now have 'daughter of radio car'! Here they are nestled together whilst the fate of 'mum' is decided. I like the carpet in the new one!!

All this week we're doing a feature on 'made in Norfolk' and Monday found me on the old runway of RAF Sculthorpe, now Tattersett Business Park where Listawood produces ceramic and printed goods for the promotional market. MD Alex Turner showed me their cabinet of awards and their latest product, a mug with bacteria resistant coating - progress since their first fridge magnet.

Tuesday at Rackheath where'made in Norfolk' discovered the print works that produces bags for bread and all those plastic covers that magazines are sold in these days. Neil Squance is works manager. Over at Bowthorpe, Sinclair International has sales and marketing manager Tim Watkins watching over millions of sticky labels that go on your fruit around the world. They also manufacture the machines that put the labels on although he didn't agree with me that they must be 'fruit machines'!

Kelvin Hewett-Allard at Cantley makes jumps for the show ring and very colourful they are too. On a bitterly cold morning the offcuts make for a cosy fire and his wife bakes exceedingly good rolls and fills them with smokey bacon. Yum!

Thursday morning just outside Attleborough an anonymous looking industrial unit is the production centre for a worldwide manufacturer of kyaks. Tootega is run by Johnny Butcher the marketing manager, James Dennis director and Steve Giles director.They showed me the production line and the warehouse. They're planning to grow soon and have a product that's truly 'made in Norfolk'!

World Bowls Final at Potters Hopton

A really exciting final this year which began with the entertainments team from Potters with a Burt Bacharach songbook. MC Richard had everyone doing the 'Takeaway' song including all the cations from Breakfast Show Producer Steve Martin! Then Andy Thomson and Justin Greenslade came out after a delay because of the tennis. At the end, Andy came out victorious after 17 years since last winning it!

Day Trip To York

Nearly a year ago I was on a train that got delayed by more than 3 hours a consequence of which was a full refund (in travel vouchers) by the rail company. I've used a few for local daytrips but, faced with the expiry date, needed to use up the balance quick so, whilst I'm on holiday I suggested a day trip first class to York which after deducting the vouchers, came to £3.80. Why not?

Pic 1. The bonus was that on the day East Coast trains were providing complimentary meals and drinks to all first class passengers! Here's my lunch. A very decent chicken and mushroom pie, chips and salad with a generous glass of red wine. No complaints. Pic 2 arrival at York station. An old large and impressive building but if you zoom in you'll see that the ironwork does need some attention. Pic 3. Outside the station is the city wall which is impressive. We didn't have time to walk along it though. Maybe next time.

Pic 4. One of the gates or 'Bar' as they're known. This is the south bar entrance from London and the south. Inside they've pedestrianised a large area which makes it pleasant to walk round the many shops. The equivalent of Norwich's Elm Hill is the Shambles (pic 5) except theirs is bustling because it's crammed with loads of small businesses. It would make Elm Hill look more like it used to! Pic 6 shows the statue of Minerva sitting on a pile of books at the alley leading to York Minster Yard.

I've selected just a few of dozens of pics from York Minster. Works still ongoing. At present they're restoring the huge east window. Still a very impressive building. If you want more pics posted let me know.

This is the outside of the Jorvik Centre near Coppergate. Couldn't take pics inside - sorry. Inside you go down to the archaeological dig where they found the remains of a Viking village. It's covered with glass so you can walk over it and then down a corridor you board a three seater suspended ride like a ghost train only this one transports you through a reconstructed village with animated Vikings and the different smells are sprayed in the air as you pass the butcher, carpenter and on the final way out, the man behind a wicker fence having a poo! Use your imagination!

Finally, we finished our day trip at the National Rail Museum near the station. It's brilliant and again there's so much more than the pics show. Pic 1 The Mallard. Pic 2 a cutaway to show the insides of the engine. Pic 3. I got Sheri to stand next to this monster train built in Lancashire for China. The train home was just a regular size but a free afternoon tea and wine were laid on so no complaints and home by supper.

An eventful Monday at the Hethel Engineering Centre where MD Simon Coward enthused about the £6m expansion which will double its size. Pity none of the engineers there were able to help the Radio Car which died and had to be removed forcibly by breakdown truck! The forecast to date is that spares required are no longer available so the poor old girl might be going to meet her maker.

GMB members and spokesman Ivan Mercer, were on strike again outside Colmans in Norwich as part of a national walkout over pension and final salary deals. Unilever failed to get round the table since the last strike a month back. At the Courts, Judge Peter Jacobs talked to 30 business people about the links between unemployment and crime. He believes taking on ex offenders helps society by preventing them turning to crime again.

Heather Guthrie at the Castle Museum hows me a copy of the Titian painting of "Diana and Actaeon" which will be coming here in March to go on show. Currently travelling the country this 'priceless' work of art depicts the moment when Actaeon stumbles upon the godess Diana bathing. A further painting by Titian shows the sticky end it led to!

In 'Cafe Canary' with me on Friday to discuss the forthcoming Chelsea game were left to right, former Manager Ken Brown, ardent fan Claire Richards and ex player Bill Punton. They're hoping for a win by a close margin. Kick off at 12.30 Saturday.

Impromptu Booze Cruise

Remember we reported on the Breakfast Show some weeks back that HMRC has changed the 'allowances' for tobacco. Often referred to as Duty Free it isn't technically correct. The duty has been paid in the country of purchase if in the EU. The word allowances is not strictly true. To quote their own website "there is no limit on alcohol and tobacco brought from another EU country". Before last October they said that you could enter Britain with 3200 cigarettes and 3kg tobaccowith no questions asked. There was no change to the alcohol recommendations. From 1st October they were saying only 800 cigarettes OR 1kg tobacco. This effectively made it more inconvenient (and expensive) to keep crossing the channel to bring back these amounts. However, read the small print and interpret it as it is. There is NO limit, it's just a question of whether or not you can prove that it's for your own use or a gift. They can confiscate any amount if they have reason to suspect that it's for commercial purposes - in other words you're selling it on. Yesterday was a very successful day. The trip went really well with light traffic and no delays. At Adinkerke I purchased double the recommended cigarettes expecting to be challenged. I had prepared my defence and was all set at Customs when asked about my purchases.

Nick Lee (left) Vice Chair of North Walsham Chamber of Trade runs Broadland Travel on the market place. Justin Kuttschreuter runs Hughes Electrical. Both are against plans by the NNDC to impose car parking charges in the town to avoid a rise in council tax. They says it will put people off coming to spend their money at a time when Mary Portas is advocating free car parking as an essential for success. The council hopes it will raise £100k none of which, argues Nick, will be spent on North Walsham.

Themelthorpe near Foulsham has just opened two new squirrel enclosures for breeding red squirrels and reintroducing them to the wild. Robin Page pictured here from the Countryside Restoration Trust is thrilled that the project is underway. They've worked closely with places at Thetford and Pensthorpe.

Graham Kingdon and friends meet up at the Forester Close centre at Tuckswood to discuss First Eastern Buses decision to cut the route that stops for them just outside. It'll mean a 300 metre walk to the nearest alternative on Hall Road and many of the local residents are elderly and infirm. They feel they had no say in the changes which apparently have to be made as part of a cost cutting exercise.

A BIT OF TRUE GRIT

OUT SHOPPING THIS WEEKEND WE WERE AMAZED TO COME ACROSS THIS OLD PRODUCT WHICH I THOUGHT HAD GONE OUT OF PRODUCTION YEARS AGO! They haven't even changed the name as so often happens. This scouring powder is the best (and only) thing for cleaning old discoloured grout. Just a damp cloth (or old toothbrush) and a quick scrub brings it back fresh and white!

The sudden closure of Budgens Drayton has left the village without a supermarket but local traders are taking up the slack by increasing product ranges and providing niche services just as before. Left is butcher Richard Pratt and Garage repair workshop proprietor Keith Morgan, a parish councillor who's quite upbeat about the future which will see Tesco's take over and refurbish the supermarket to re-open in August.

The increased airport tax came into force this morning at Norwich International. CE Andrew Bell explained why. It's now £10 per adult to fly from Norwich but the child fee has been scrapped.

Wednesday morning I spoke to the Bloaters manager Mike Derbyshire about the future of Great Yarmouth FC which keeps going despite financial setbacks and player issues. Mike remains positive. That's also the case at the Royal British Legion club on Aylsham Road which had to close some weeks back because of a licence issue. Here Jan Bamber and Ernie Green aim to reopen in a couple of weeks time and want to hear from any organisations who previously used the venue to set them back on the road to recovery.

Head Teacher Tim Philips had to act quick this morning when he learnt that solar panels which were being fitted at the school were being rippid up by the wind and were crashing through the skylights. Here you can see one resting on top of the boys loo! The school should reopen tomorrow.

Sprowston, Eaton and even Wymondham have had reports of a strange 'hum' in the air, the kind you can hear rather than the smelly kind! This is Sandra Armes from Norwich who told me how she can hear an 'external' noise indoors but can't hear it when she goes outdoors. We had a big response this morning on the breakfast show.

New Years Day Cruise

We kept up the tradition of taking family and friends for a new Years Day cruise and the tide was low for the Norwich run right up inside the City. We even went round Thorpe Green with Mrs. Webb taking the helm to steer us under the rail bridge just a a train went over!(1) I'd already navigated the crooked approach to Bishops Bridge (2) and coming home we spotted this rather clever extension on a boat. Is it a bimini or is it a shed? HAPPY NEW YEAR

Boxing Day in the early hours they came to spend. These grainy pics show the queue for the Next Sale in Norwich. Next indeed, next to the peace camp which sprang up to highlight the excesses of the capitalist society! Wonder what the shoppers thought as they lugged huge bags full of discounted clothes through the silent streets of the city?

Sales in the City were slow starting this morning unlike the queue that formed at NCFC's ticket office. Tottenham tonight, Fulham next Saturday and the game they wanted the tickets for was Chelsea!

It's a time for new lambs and Roger & Sue Banks at Holly Croft Farm near Great Ellingham have had a dozen over the Christmas period but none so troublesome as Christmas day lamb Rudolph pictured here. At the East Anglia Tennis & Squash club I met a man with a most unusual occupation. Liam Nolan makes his living by restringing tennis raquets. He's applied his skills for the most famous players and travels the world teaching others just how it should be done!

Holly Stolworthy from the Sealife Sanctuary at Hu8nstanton met me on the beach at Old Hunsatnton where the sperm whale was washed up on Christmas eve. Already dead, the tides have failed to take it back out to sea so now they may have to dismember it onshore and take it away. It's attracted large crowds but it's such a sad sight.

My last assignment of 2011 is to Denver Windmill where Lindsay & Mark Abel are still trying to get reapirs completed after the sails began to break up during a school visit back in October. As you can see, the stocks are still missing and they're having to grind the flour with an old machine. Naturally, sales of their flour are down and they hope that 2012 will bring the help that they need so much to carry on at this Norfolk attraction. Part of our heritage.

Delays This Week.

My aged computer gave up the ghost at the start of the week but undeterred I took advantage of the opportunity to strip it down and upgrade the whole system. It's amazing where you can get a crevice nozzle! The old girl is super fast now and bristling with add-ons. The voice recognition means I can walk into the office and tell it to boot up now to the programme that I want. As yet we've not struck up a meaningful two-way conversation but give it time.

Imogen and Trevor Ashwin, artists in Reepham, are objecting to plans for 250 houses to be built over what they describe as an ancient woodland way on the edge of town. To draw attention to it, they baked and 'hung' gingerbread men along the route with a cluster of them spelling out a line from a Yeats poem. They're hoping to attract more supporters of their cause. Meanwhile, at Rackheath I met Richard Brinkley who was one of dozens of passengers who should have had a day in Lapland yesterday only to be kept waiting at Norwich airport for hours and then being told that the flight was cancelled because of the poor weather conditions.

In the morning sunshine and a biting wind, nothing stops the serious sportsman in Norfolk. Bob Laidlaw is a member of Shooting In Norfolk.com and he gave us some sound advice on the increasingly popular sport which Kate Middleton will be participating in on Boxing Day at Sandringham. Whilst we were waiting a flock of aout a million rooks came by. It took about 25 minutes for them to pass.

The ingredients for thousands of Christmas meals are being distributed by the Buckingham Emergency Food Appeal. Peter Bowles says the response has been brilliant this year. Just look at the warehouseful behind him. Likewise though, demand has increased and we we spoke the pallets of food were being loaded for early delivery.

In Dereham market place is Chambers newsagents. The store has served the community for the past 175 years including the working lifetime of Colin Chambers who met me outside. The current owners can't find a buyer and Colin's worried that it will disappear forever. In Fakenham Lynda Hill went to the new surgery on her mobility scooter but was made to leave it at the door and use a wheelchair to go upstairs. She's complained that the chair was too small and chaffed her legs and we asked the surgery about their policy in such matters. Down the road in the market place Christmas shopping was in full swing.

Strange lights in the sky led some people to suspect UFO's but it was actually a laser light on the tower of Cromer Parish church. Tony Shipp from the towns Christmas Light Committee and the Rev'd David Court look up at the guilty tower. Nearby in Southrepps a return visit one year since the opening of the Post Office Coffee Shop with Dirck and Lorraine Geary. It's been a remarkable success and always good to finish with an upbeat story especially as Christmas cheer is on the doorstep.

Christmas is just such a magical time if you're young and at Thursford there's the Christmas Experience which enthralled our grandaughter Grace on Sunday. We all went to see the 4D film show before taking the long and winding path to Santa's House. Grace loved all the busy elves and the animals along the route before we went in to see Santa himself! Grace came away with a big present but was more interested in dancing with the floor lights as they revolved around the restaurant area. Then another show with a versatile young magician before leaving for home. She's going to be sooo excited come December 25th.

When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves didn't produce toys as fast as the regular ones and Santa began to feel the pre-Christmas pressure.
Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mother was coming to visit which stressed him even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.
Then he began to load the sleigh and one of the floorboards Cracked and a bag full of toys spilled out on the ground.
Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard he found that the elves had drunk all the cider and had hidden the rum. In his frustration he accidentally dropped the cider jug which smashed into hundreds of glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. When he went to get the broom he discovered that the mice had eaten all the straw off the end.
Just then the doorbell rang. An irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open and there stood a litlle angel with a great big Christmas tree.
The angel said cheerfully, "Merry Christmas Santa, isn't it a lovely day, I have a lovely tree for you, where would you like me to put it?"
AND SO BEGAN THE TRADITION OF THE ANGEL ON TOP OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE.

The Santa Claus at the shopping mall was very surprised when Emily, a young lady aged about 20 came up and sat on his knee. Santa doesn't usually take requests from adults but he smiled at her nicely and asked what she wanted for Christmas.
"Something for my mother please Santa." she said sweetly.
"Something for your mother? That's very loving and thoughtful of you." Smiled Santa. "What would you like me to bring her?"
Without turning a hair, Emily answered,"A son-in-law!"

It was Christmas eve at the meat counter and a woman asked anxiously, looking over the last remaining turkeys on display, "Excuse me. Do these turkeys get any bigger?"
"No Madam," the assistant replied, "they're all dead."

It was just before Christmas and the magistrate was in a good mood. He asked the prisoner in the dock what he was charged with.
The prisoner replied, "Doing my Christmas shopping early."
"That's no crime," said the magistrate. "Just how early were you?"
The prisoner paused before looking the judge in the eye." Before the shop opened your worship."

Apart from the Tea stall just Christine Boggis with her plants and Ken Allen with his fresh veg were at Stalham Market today on the old station yard car park. Mary Portas the retail guru is suggesting that stalls becaome part of the street scene and they both agree. Something needs to be done to revibe the high streets across the land. Ken wants to know why the £10,000 Tesco gave them for the market hasn't been spent yet. If you want to spend a penny you have to go to the other end of the street to the supermarket!!

Deputy Head Teacher at Taverham Junior School, Adam Mason told us how they've been robbed three times recently. Thieves stole the gas cylinders that heat the outside classrooms one of which has now been closed. It will cost them £1000 out of funds that would have helped the children. Nearby, at Thorpe Marriott I met a remarkable man called Tony Conner who's looked after his wife for seven years now. Penny has dementia and requires 24/7 care which Tony provides at their home. The garage has been converted to a special bedroom. Tony advertised for a part-time personal assistant for 5 hours a week and has had no replies.

So, the NDR or Northern Distributor Road is likely to be built. Starting at the Postwick hub with junctions at Plumstead Road, Salhouse Road, Wroxham Road, North Walsham Road and the airport before termination at the Holt/Cromer roads. Nick Bond (left) of Visit Norwich welcomes the sceme and says that it will benefit the city whilst Fran Whymark at Rackheath said opinions there were divided. He himself thinks they'll benefit although the road will pass just 200 metres from his bungalow on Vera Road.

Norwich already holds the record for the shortest double yellow lines but now Colegate has a pair measuring 20 inches and Tiny Little from the Alexandria Pub on Stafford Street has had these painted on the road opposite coming in at a diminutive SEVENTEEN inches. Can the City Council do any better in the future? Recycling at Dereham resumes this morning with a brand new hi-tech yard with compacters, crushers and even a shop to buy unwanted goos. Monday in Fakenham. The new surgery is about to open at midday and Chief Executive John Fraser shows us around the Y shaped building with all new facilities. In the town, Papworths butchers are doing weel. Sam Papworth was so pleased to win carcasse of the year - that's a beast from his own stock not him! Then back to the parish church. We were there on Thursday last for the start of the Christmas tree festival. At the weekend thieves broke in through the window (now patched) and stole £200. The response from listeners and well wishers has been tree-mendous!!

Just one of the many families that benefit from the Toys & Tins Appeal run jointly between the Salvation Army and BBC Radio Norfolk. Juste Davenport with her four boys is a single parent and active member of SPIN (Single Parents In Norfolk) who says that the Christmas gift parcels from the appeal make a big difference to their Christmas. Thank you.

Just look at Holt Lowes - a 110 acre open sire next to the Country Park where 8 Dartmoor ponies have been put out to graze. I spent an hour and a half with Simon Harrap trying to locate them without luck. Hence the panoramic view instead of the close-up of a pony!

The Norfolk Car Club now have vehicles for use at Aylsham, Reepham and Norwich. With their own parking spaces marked, Oliver Chastney lives near to this one. He says since he joined the scheme his annual motoring costs are LESS than what he used to pay for insurance!

At Newton Flotman they've decorated the church with 300 angels. Why? Because they need to raise £120k to repair the tower. It opens Friday witha Xmas Fayre at the school on Saturday after which they'll parade them back to the church.

Friday and on the pickett line at Colmans Norwich, GMB spokesman Ivan Mercer explains why they've come out against the proposed pension changes by Unilever.

Struggling to save enough money for a deposit on your own home is hard enough today but Rachel Smith and her husband heard of Broadland council's plan to help couples from rented accomodation who are already paying more in rent than a mortgage would cost them!

To round off the week the remarkable Nora Long who'll be honoured today for forty years service to the Norfolk & Norwich hospital as a volunteer and she plans to keep doing it!!

With a strike on Wednesday, many schools were closing but for Tracey Moulton a problem. Both Rosie & Jessie go to Mulbarton Junior School which is only partly open that day. It means Jessie will attend while Rosie stays at home. Mum has to take the day off and would rather have both attend or both off!

A shortage of rainfall means that farmers like Andrew Ross from Houghton St.Giles face a dificult time ahead. This week farmers from the fens met with the Environment Agency to discuss how water acn be saved and shared.

So it's December so Christmas is coming and at Fakenham parish church there's a show of 90 trees with 76 participating charities all hoping you'll donate to their cause wen you go to see them. There's tombola, raffle and refreshments there too with free admission from 10am - 8pm until Thursday 8th.

Business Secretary Vince Cable was in town on Friday to meet with Norfolks business community. Nice to find him at the Premier Inn on Duke Street rather than the more expensive establishments!

Would you go to a barbers shop with topless hairdressers? That's the proposal for a bar on Prince of Wales Road in Norwich right next door to Bob Gilbert in the Railway Mission. Members of the Evangelical Free Church who meet there don't really want it. They intend to oppose the plans. Watch this space.

The old man placed an order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink. He unwrapped the plain burger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the fries dividing them into two piles one of which he placed in front of his wife.
He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat a few bites of his hamburger, the people around them were looking on and whispering.
As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man thanked him but said they were fine - they were used to sharing everything.
People were noticing that the little old lady hadn't eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and ocassionally taking a sip of the drink.
Again the young man came over and begged them to accept his offer of another meal for them. This time it was the old woman who said, "No thank you - we are used to sharing everything."
Finally the old man finished his half and wiped his face neatly with the napkin. Again, the young man came over to the old lady who had yet to eat a single bite, and asked "Why don't you eat? What are you waiting for?"
The old lady looked up at his face and said, "the teeth"

Three men, one 60, one 70 and one 80.

A 92 year old woman goes to the vet with her dog and asks him to look at the poor thing. The vet says, "you have to buy some hair removal cream and smear it in the dogs ear. That'll get rid of his trouble in there."
So she leaves the vets and goes to the nearest pharmacy.
"I'd like some hair removal cream please." She says to the man behind the counter.
"If it's for your legs don't shave for a week after." He says.
"No it's not for my legs."
"Then if it's for your underarms, don't shave for a week after." Said the pharmacist.
The old lady looks at him and says, "It's for my snautzer."
"In that case," he says, "Don't ride a bike for a week."

Once upon a time there lived a king with a beautiful daughter, the Princess.
There was a problem though. Everything the Princess touched would melt. No matter what. Wood, stone, metal etc..
Because of this men were afraid of her. Nobody wanted to marry her and the King despaired.
He consulted his wizard who told hime, "If she touches just one thing that does NOT melt she will be cured."
So, the King came up with a plan. Any man who could bring an object that would not melt when she touched it could marry her and inherit the King's wealth.
Three young Princes took up the challenge. One brought a sword of the finest steel but as she touched it so it melted.
The second brought diamonds, the hardest substance known but again they melted as she touched them.. He went away disappointed.
The third Prince approached. He told the Princess to put her hand in his pocket and feel what was in there. As she did so her face turned red. She felt something hard as she held it in her hand but it did NOT melt. The King was overjoyed and the kingdom celebrated. The third Prince married her and they lived happily ever after.
And the question is, what was in the Princes pants?

In front of their 40' Aquafibre boat is Martin & Jill Lee who rowed across to join John Fisher, chairman of the planning committee at Thorpe St.Andrew Town Council. The Government wants the rules relaxed by the Broads Authority making more moorings available for this lifestyle.

The Council is considering selling the meadow to Asda but recently Asda approached the diocese to buy the church, build a new one at a different location and give them £400,000. It's the home of a shrine to the Far East Prisoners of War and Nikki Prince believes it should stay there and opposes any such plans. Paul Hawkins is a member of the lobby group WAW (Wymondham Asks Why).

Little Billy was always getting into trouble at school and was always being told off by his parents and his teachers. After one particularly naughty spell and being at the end of their tether, his parents decided to move him to a Catholic school.
After just two weeks they noticed his behaviour was superb and all his grades were top class. Amazed, his parents said to him " why have you changed your attitude and are doing so well at svhool?" To which Billy replied, "on the first day, after seeing the man nailed to the cross above the school door, I knew these teachers meant business!"

I took my son out for his first pint yesterday. I got him a Fosters. He didn't like it so I drank it. Then I got him a Carlsberg. He didn't like it, so I drank that too. It was the same story with the Guiness and then the cider. By the time we got down to the whisky I could hardly push his pram home!

A husband and wife went to see a marriage guidance councillor who asked the husband if he knew what his wifes favourite flower was. The man held his wifes hand lovinly and looked into her eyes. "I know this one," he said, "it's Homepride isn't it?"

A fireman is at the Station working on the fire truck outside when he notices a little girl in a little red wagon with little ladders hung off the side. She's wearing a fireman's hat and has the wagon tied to her dog. The fireman walks over to take a closer look. "That sure is a nice fire truck." he says. Then he notices that the little girl has tied the rope to her dogs testicles. "I think if you were to tie that rope round the dogs neck you would go faster." The little girl looks up at him and says, "You're probably right mister but then I wouldn't have a siren."

Two rednecks are looking through a clothing catalogue and admiring the models. One says to the other "Have you seen these beautiful girls?" to which the other replies,"Yea, they're very beautiful and just look at the price."
"Wow." says the other, "at that price I'm buying one." Good idea." says his mate. "Order one and if she's as good as she looks in the catalogue I'll get one too."
Three weeks later they meet up again in the street. "Hey, did you ever get the girl you ordered from that catalogue?" Says one. The other replies, "No, not yet but it shouldn't be long now. I got her clothes yesterday!"

John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a secluded area of Saskatchewan. After spending a great evening chatting the night away, the next morning John's grandfather prepared a breakfast of bacon, eggs, ham and toast. However, John noticed a film on his plate and questioned his grandfather. "Are these plates clean?"
"They're as clean as cold water can get them." he replied. "Just go ahead and finish your meal sonny."
For lunch the old man made hamburgers. Again John was concerned about the plate which had tiny specks around the edge. "Are you sure these plates are clean?" Without looking up the old man said, "I told you before sonny, they're as clean as cold water can get them. Now I don't want to hear another word about it."
Late that afternoon John was about to leave to go into town for the night when his grandfathers dog started to growl and wouldn't let him pass. John yelled, "Grandfather, your dog won't let me get into my car." Without diverting his attention from the football on TV, the old man shouted, "Coldwater, lay down do'ya hear me!!"

Yesterday I was at Sainsbury's buying a large bag of Winalot for my loyal pet when the woman behind me at the checkout asked if I had a dog. What a silly question! Since I'm retired I tend to be cynical so answered her. "No, I don't have a dog, I'm going on the Winalot diet again. Mind you I shouldn't because the last time I ended up in hospital but I'd lost two stone before waking up in intensive care. "
"What happened?" she enquired. I told her it was essentially a perfect diet. You load your pockets with Winalot nuggets and simply have one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete and worked so well I was going to try again.
By this time others in the queue had overheard our conversation and were closing in to hear more.
She wanted to more. "So did you end up in intensive care because the food poisoned you?"
"No," I reassured her. " It happened when I stepped off the kerb to sniff an Irish Setters bum that the car hit me."

Sprowston Manor Hotel & Country Club heard our broadcast on Friday about reclaiming all those small bars of soap left by clients in the bathroom. General Manager Jodie Guttrich is going to apply the same principle here and will see if the Marriott group worldwide can take it on board too!

Surely the Government has to do something about all this metal theft lije clamping down on the scrap yards. There's talk of a new law "attack on infrastructure". Tony Bone is Director of Fram Watch. He says farmers livelihoods and the whole food chain can be disrupted by unscrupulous thieves.

Nicola Markwell at Redwings Horse Sanctuary Hapton Hall reminded us that horses and ponies take money and effort to keep well. They're getting more and more abandoned animals as owners feel the squeeze on their pocket. If you're thinking of buying, why not try a rescue horse from Redwings? Success after last weeks story about the fire at Broadland Hams on the Sweetbriar Industrial Estate. I met Director Edward Porter at their new (temporary) premises at Little Melton Food Park. All the staff have pulled together to get business rolling out again with rented machinery. Will they say here or move back, theyre not sure at present. With Christmas orders coming in it'll be the new year before they can stop to think about it.

Let the festivities begin! Liz Wimms from the City Council and City Centre Manager Stefan Gurney with the 'tree' at the Forum - one of a trail around the City. Tonight the lights are switched on with fireworks and all manner of things going on as it's late night shopping. Look out in December for the 'snow' cannon at the Forum. On the hour every hour blasting out artificial snow!!

Virgin Money opens today at Davey Place in the City. The former Post Office now looks like a cocktail lounge. Branson has just bought Northern Rock a branch of which is just round the corner. It's Children In Need day today and enterprising Hannah Colby (with ears) has for the second year, marked up one of her vans from Norfolk Truck & Van Ltd to help the good cause. She's been touring supermarkets and so far collected over £3,000 to add to last years total of over £4,000. Brilliant.

What a weekend! Absolutely flat calm on Saturday. Just look (1) not a breath of wind. Fudge always enjoys a spot of fishing (2) but didn't catch anything. A hot cuury on Saturday and a warm night and Sunday we went to take part in Remembrance Sunday at the war memorial in Loddon. (3) passing the old mill. (4) in front of the church and memorial. (5) as they march off.

After Sunday lunch at the Kings Head it's off home on a beautiful afternoon (6) getting home just as the sun is setting(7). Perfick !

Photo's left to right top to bottom starting with Professor Edward Acton, Vice Chancellor at the UEA where he revealed plans for the land in the background. A £15m centre to encourage more science and low carbon industry to Norfolk. At Hethersett High, Chairman of Hethersett Olympic Committee with head Kerry Jordan and River, Taylor and Fenn all excited that the torch will be setting off from the school on the second day of it's time in Norfolk. In Aylsham market place this marquee outside the twon hall is 'home' for 90 hours to Paul McGrath, a member of the Aylsham branch of the Royal British Legion. His marathon is to help them raise money and the 90 hours is up with the silence on Friday morning. Jill Chapman is Manager of the Big C Information Centre at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. We heard the remarkable story of Laura Binder who went into remission from liver cancer after her 9 year old daughter wrote her a letter every day and gave it to her. The power of positive thinking was highlighted. The fire at Broadland Hams on the Sweetbriar Industrial Estate rendered the building useless. It's believed to have started in processing machinery. Roy Masters climbs the ladder up his 50 foot wooden lifeboat. The 'Elizabeth Simpson' saved many lives before becoming a pleasure boat on the Broads ending her days at Potter Heigham. Roy couldn't see her rot away and so craned it into his back garden at North Creake where he'll begin the massive restoration job. That's the 'head' in the bow! We talked turkey prices with Trevor Roberts on Friday morning. They've risen by about 10% on last year so not too bad if you shop around. His come from Lincolnshire. Finally, it's Armistice Day and a revived memorial at North Walsham stands where the Memorial Hospital once stood. The new building wraps itself around the new plinth where Laura McCartney-Gray and Brian Elliott told us of the rededication service taking place today.

A doctor has an affiar with his nurse and shortly after she falls pregnant. Not wanting his wife to know, the doctor pays for her to go to Italy to have the child. "How will I let you know when the baby's born?" she asks. He replies,"just send a postcard and write spaghetti on the back."
She takes the money and flies to Italy and the months pass by.
One day the doctors wife says, "A very strange postcard arrived today but I don't understand what it means."
"Let me see," says the doctor taking the card from her. He reads it and immediately falls to the floor with a heart attack. Paramedics rush him to the hospital where the consultant asks what might have caused it.
"Well," she says," I just gave him a postcard that said Spaghetti Spaghetti Spaghetti and Spaghetti. Two with meatballs and sausage two without!"

I need your advice. I suspect my wife of having an affair. She's been going out on a lot of girls night out things but when the taxi gets home she doesn't get out for at least thirty minutes. Last night I hid behind my BSA Lightning 650 Twin and waited. Up came the taxi and 30 minutes later she gets out with her clothes all over the place and her hair messed up. Then, my worst fears were confirmed. I looked down and saw it! A crack on the BSA's frame. What should I do? Should I use a mig or rod to repair it?

Halloween and I'm at the new bat sanctuary at East Winch RSPCA Wildlife Centre with manager Alison Charles. (1) then to St.Andrews church Holme Hale. I was here 5 years ago because they have so many bats that their droppings and urine rain down on the congregation. Centre pic 3 is bat consultant Philip Parker. There's little that can be done to stop it! At Greenbanks Hotel Great Fransham Jennie Locke (5) shows me the chalet where she's raising young hedgehogs. The James Paget hospital came in for some flack this week and David Page (7) rang us to say he was more than happy with the service he got. Patrick Thompson (8) is head of Norfolk Link, the local watchdog. He met with Health Secretary Andrew Lansley on Thursday. Jill Taylor (9) told us the remarkable story of her uncle shot down in WWII in Holland where they've dug up his plane and she's unveiling a memorial near to where his grave is. (10) Wonder boy artist Kieron Williamson with his family at their new home in Ludham. Another 12 of his paintings are up for sale soon at the gallery in Holt which netted him £150k last time. Finally, the Wymondham group getting ready for their first lemon day! Yes, that's the colour theme to promote the town. Pictures in order of stories. Steve Gordon is Chairman of Kenninghall Parish Council. He says plans for a green energy power plant will ruin the area and make too much noise. 400 people have signed a petition against the idea. On a lighter note, the Hamlet Centre is in the refurbished St.Raphael Club and Childrens Services Manager tells me how much they rely on volunteer helpers. Wymondham at dawn next to see about the part time street lights. 4,500 have been converted to switch off during the night. A total of 23,000 will eventually be converted. Left to right, Wymondham resident and local member of the County Council Joe Mooney with resident Jill Cartmell who says it's made no difference to her life. Graham Plant is cabinet member for Planning & Transportation. People were worried about an increase in crime and accidents but statistics show there's no difference. Empty roads and empty train under the channel for a visit to Adinkerke's "Tobacco Road" now very quiet since allowances were reduced drastically. Even the coach was only just over half full and when we got to Citie Europe there weren't the usual crowds of vistors and locals.Having said that there were savings still to be made especially with French wine prices low. South African, Italian, Californian and Chilean wines offering some good deals. Made good time home too without much hastle getting back through customes. I did notice that they were pulling people aside and grilling them about their purchases and the frequency of their trips.

Hard to tell now what the 'Cleo' looked like. This weekend she'd just set off for a picnic afternoon when a bang and flames engulfed her. Fortunately a passing boat rescued the woman on board whilst the man got to shore before she sank. The fire brigade did what they could but now all that can be seen is her bow rail protruding from the muddy water which she lies under.

Two little old ladies, Dorace & Jackie were sitting on a park bench outside the town hall where a flower show was in progress. The short one, Jackie, leaned over to Dorace and said. "Life is so boring. We never have any fun anymore. For £10 I'd take my clothes off and streak through the flower show!"
"You're on!" said Dorace holding up the note.
So, Jackie slowly fumbled her way out of her clothes and, completely naked, streaked through the door of the town hall.
Waiting outside, her friend could hear a commotion inside and then there was some cheering and then applause.
Eventually, the smiling Jackie emerged from the building surrounded by the cheering clapping crowd.
"What happened?" asked Dorace.
"Well," smiled Jackie, "I won £1000 as First Prize in the best DRIED arrangement section!"

Monday at Mileham Community Shop where the struggle continues to provide a service for the locals. Nancy Krois is Chair of the Shop Management Committee. For the past couple of years they've had support from Norfolk Rural Community Council but have decided to go it alone. The Plunkett Foundation has given them free guidance and there's an AGM in the Village Hall on 20th October.

Here we are at Cromer again! This time it's not an old loo but a watchtower that's coming up for auction. On the cliffs between the church (in the background) and the lighthouse on the path that connects them all is this 30x30 foot two storey watchtower that's already been converted as a one-bedroom home. John Parsons showed it to me although we didn't have the keys to get in. Interest has already been shown as it comes with a planning application already in place (although not yet granted). The auction is at Barnham Broom 27th October, auctioneers are William H. Brown.

So, they're about to start the dualling of the last nine miles of the A11 from Thetford next week. Much to the delight of the majority although some say it's not necessary. Traffic early this morning approaching Thetford from Norwich was moving well but once you get to the town, the bottleneck slows it all down.

Under threat of being sold off, last night the City Council decided to apply for English Heritage grants to help preserve the Britons Arms, a fourteenth century building on historic Elm Hill. Partners Sue Skipper and Gilly Mixer fought a hard camapaign not just to save their business at the coffee house but also to keep the building in public hands rather than being auctioned off. As I said this morning - they're cock-a-hoop!

1. A group of people at Reymerson who decided that needed a village sign. This is where they'll put it, on the verge opposite the village hall. Something to celebrate. 2. On the other hand, no celebrations at Taverham Garden centre where the shops at the rear were burgled by thieves who left a mess. They've cleaned up now, ready for business and the security will be improved. 3. Celebrating the fact that he's at the fron of the queue at the UEA where Coldplay tickets go on sale Saturday morning.

Over the weekend our newsdesk took a call from Phil Clarke at his fruit and veg shop. It's opposite the boarded up Shemakers pub which has been closed for six years. As a consquence, locals use the car park but mysteriously, signs had appeared threatening a fine for parking. Phil spoke to the owner of the property who knew nothing about it so I went with the rdio car this morning. Subsequently, after our broadcast, the service provider came on the show to explain the situation. Although clamping had been mentioned he said that his company has nothing to do with such a practice. The signs have been removed and we'll follow up any further activity there.

Just outside Swaffham there are many acres growing carrots for supermarkets but agronomist Pete Saunders has a special row growing that are yellow, cream and even white. It's a trial of different coloured carrots and the taste is much sweeter. We plucked them out of the ground, gave them a wipe and ate them on air. Very crunchy and definitely sweeter, but will the public go for strange coloured carrots?

Our pig farming industry is under pressure to maintain the high standards of production. At the moment it's running at a loss and a campaign starts today to show people that buying British pork - even for a few pence more - makes for good sense and quality. Look for the red tractor on the label next time you buy otherwise farmers like Richard Lilwall may just stop producing the quality pork products.

Thursday. Over 32,000 people are waiting for social housing in the county. In Breckland the figure is over 1400. Gordon Parttridge is responsible for social housing and empty homes in the area. He announced a new initiative to encourage homeowners to bring houses back into use. They don't have any council stock to sell so that's one sourse of income they'll have to manage without.

A tempestuous dawn at Cromer on Friday but Town Mayor Greg Hayman bikes down to the pier to tell us how they're taking part in our Happy Hour scheme at the end of October. A volunteer litter pick on the beach, As he said, if the wind is as strong as today they'll be chasing it. The, on the spur of the moment I visited Cromer market. Last time we were there 11 months ago it was dying on its' feet with just two stalls. One was Ian and Karl Jaggers plant stall (seen here with a regular customer). They're pleased that they still come here on a Friday morning.

Treasure Quest Sunday 2nd October 2011

As Navigator for Sunday we began the Quest at Hellington and the first clue took us to the control tower at Seething airstrip where there was an open day. The answer to the clue was an engine from a Liberator. The next clue had us thinking we were going to the wrong place but it turned out good as we pulled up outside the cottage owned by an ex-BBC employee. The horse held the next clue which took Becky to a tank show where she had to get into the turret to find the next clue. That led us to a ploughing competition at Silfield and after a frantic search the 'crawler' gave up the secret of the treasure. That was found at the top of a 12 metre high climbing frame at the scout camp at Eaton Vale. Although we missed winning by minutes, Becky did complete the challenge to climb up and get it during Extra Time. Well done Norfolk. Just a bit quicker next time.

Cabinet member for Planning and Transportation at the County Council, Graham Plant was outlining the problems facing the free bus pass scheme. A campaign starts today called "Fair Fares". He says the passes are not under threat but the financial implications are that some bus services, especially in rural areas, may be cut to save funds.

From the bus station in Great Yarmouth it was a short trip across the Haven Bridge. This lifting bridge is a very busy link to the town and esential safety works means there'll be some disruption. Temporary traffic lights will replace those at the junction with Hall Quay whilst pedestrians will find that there's only one side of the bridge in use. It should take a few weeks and will cost £70,000.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer for Norfolk Fire Service, Roy Harold met me at the Kingfisher Restaurant at Walcott, partly owned by Graham French as we talked about the new parliamentary act to help with planning for future flooding. In Norfolk almost a hundred thousand homes and businesses are at risk.

Thursdays trip takes me to the NEWS recycling centre at Longwater Lane Costessey where Mark Allen and Bill Borrett explain how 45% of waste is now recycled in Norfolk - up one and a half percent. Food waste recycling is making the difference .Meanwhile, at Briston, a recycled Romany caravan ( a bowtop) is being hired out for weddings etc. by Debra Kidd whose family rescued it and renovated it. Friday in Aylsham Market Place where Town Clerk Mo Anderson-Dungar shows off their certificate for making the town plastic bag free. It's been three years now since their campaign began with much success. From today in Wales they're charging 5p for every bag issued.
For their part in the Norfolk Food Festival, Aylsham has put the farmers market in the town hall where this evening a meal from local produce has been a sell-out success. Northern Rivers - 17 - 25 Sept 2011

Off we went with a week to re-explore the northern end of the Norfolk Broads with another crossing of the infamous Wroxham Bridge without a repeat performance of last time. First we had to get there which means downriver along the Yare and across Breydon Water, catching the tide right to get under the two bridges there.

By the lower reaches of the Yare the storm clouds had gathered and there were bolts of lightning striking the marshes. Fortunately the wind wasn't too strong but we put in at Burgh Castle and visited a friend whilst we let the rest of the tide go out. Late afternoon we made Great Yarmouth, still with some rainy intervals, but safely under the bridges. As the light was fading we thought we'd spend the night at Stokesby. It was FULL. This was the first indication of how busy this part of the Broads still is. On with the navigation lights and press on to Acle Bridge by darkness.

Early next morning we headed for Wroxham. Passing through Horning we spotted this new landmark - the symbol of one of the hire companies. All along the route there were boats, boats and more boats but we reached our destination just after midday. Availing ourselves of some friends moorings we checked out the local knowledge to find that there was too much water in the system at the moment and we wouldn't get under - or - if we did we might not get back. As there's no public moorings this side of the bridge we had to abandone the mission. I know what you're saying!!

What we did spot was a new looking wherry that we haven't seen before. Couldn't make out the name because it was in scroll type gold lettering which was impossible to decipher. Anyone know? This was Sunday afternoon, the busiest part of the week and jostling our way downriver on the Bure we took a diversion to Ranwaorth (Malthouse) Broad. It was by pure look that a familiar looking boat pulled away as we were coming in to moor. Friends with a similar taste to ours when it comes to boats. Thanks guys. It was quite obvious by now that this wouldn't mean a peaceful nights sleep squashed in between the others we we stayed for a while and gained some inside knowledge from a local. Turning up the River Ant, through Ludham Bridge and past How hill and Irstean we made across Barton Broad and eventually found what we were looking for. We thought we'd been on every mooring on the Broads but this one is so secret that we just hadn't noticed it. So we tucked ourselves against the single quay heading under the trees and had a peaceful night after all. A long walk the next day took us across some wonderful open marshland. And that wasn't the only new walk we discovered. The next day we came to rest at Sutton Staithe. This is the eel that came out in the basin. On the surface, a coot took time to give himself a wash and, watching from a convenient overhanging branch was the kingfisher waiting to the next meal.

Another place that we walked past on our daily perambulations was an old farmhouse the gable end of which had decorative work. I think it's called pargetting or something like that. Take a look and see what I mean.

Another grand sight was the Wherry Albion (see the video by searching the name top right of the page) Some other lucky people experiencing the old black sails flapping over the Thurne. Towards the end of the trip, after a pleasant crossing of Breydon water with the tides and wind in our favour, we put in at Loddon for a night and then went round to Langley dyke for the last night. Saturday was the Yare Navigation race organised by Coldham Hall Sailing Club and we walked round to Hardley wind pump. It was their last day of the season so a BBQ and beer tent were on hand to sustain us whilst we watched the yachts race by. They've also now put in the water pump mechanism and got the pipe to return the water to the dyke so next year should see the whole mill in working order as she used to be. All in all a great week apart from when I shook the ketchup bottle and the lid flew off. I'll let you guess what happened next!

Take one empty roof facing south. SolarXchange arrived right after the scaffolders had built the platform.

The internal installations were fitted next to the electricity meter and up in the loft there's two large invertors which convert the dc current produced by the PV (photo-volataic) panels into ac.

It took just a day to fit the supporting frame and the eighteen panels. For the first three days after we had almost unbroken sunshine and we kept rushing to the meter to see what was happening. Mrs. Webb is working out how best to use all the free energy whilst I'm prepared to wait until the bills start coming in showing what the savings are!

Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival

Once again the weather held out for the two day event and we had a marvellous time. It was also the biggest turnout of the ENM we've ever had. In the past five years we've doubled in number and kit. Sheri had a few words with Nelson and we gave the crowd our usual treatment of a bayonet charge and muskett firing.

A shock start to Saturday morning when we discovered that the waterbed was leaking. They go after about ten years so it wasn't unexpected! They're still better value than ordinary mattresses and quick and easy to replace. No massive mattress to get in and out of the house and transport from the shop. 9am the hosepipe goes in to start syphoning the water out.
By 11am it's almost empty and ready to be removed.

After picking up the new one in the city, we pump the warm water from the bath into the new mattress.

By 9pm it was ready for a good nights sleep!

Radio Car Travelogue 5 - 9 September 2011

Lucy Usher has been told by the County Council that the walk to school for her children from East Ruston to Stalham is safe along the Weavers Way. She wants to keep the free bus which will still run for certain pupils but says it's unfair to those who have to pay and there are important safety isses including this crossing at Stepping Stone Lane which has a blind bend and a 60mph speed limit.

Much discussion the Breakfast Show about vets charges so I asked Louise Rayment-Dyble at All Creatures Health Care at Horsford. They sign an agreement with insurers that they won't alter their rates for a claim. The rising cost is down to improvements and increases in equipment and medicines. The X-Ray machine she's standing next to cost £50,000.

The villagers of Caston near Watton are up in arms after plans to take on land in front of their homes to use as an open space were thwarted after Breckland district council pulled out of the deal saying that they would use part of it to build two semi-detached houses. A story we'll be following. At Rocklands Primary School we were talking about safe to school issues with lead teacher Chris Reale. Part of our campaign this week.

Maffett Cruisers in Loddon is where I caught up with John Cressey, daughter-in-law Jane Deveruux-Turner and wife Linda. They were doing some work on a boat at Acle Bridge when a holidaymaker came in to moor, left the boat in reverse and pulled his wife into the river as she held on to the rope. The boat then collided with another and John quickly came to their rescue jumping into a rowing boat and saving the woman who was taken care of by Linda and Jane. Today John will rceive a bravery award at Acle in recognition of this and the 17 other people that he's pulled out of the Broads over the past 32 years! Then across to Mileham near Dereham where the community shop desperately needs to replace a broken chiller cabinet. Here Paul Kingsley showed me the fridge freezer they're having to use in the meantime. Before the end of the breakfast show we'd had an offer to replace it!

It was a gathering of Webb's on Friday as I spoke to Ian Webb, the County Councils School Crossing Patrol Manager and Maureen Webb at the gates to Wroughton Infants School in Gorleston. All part of our Safe To School campaign as the new term begins.

We were down the River Waveney with everyone on board. After a night at the Marina in Beccles we pulled through the bridge and moored at the Lido outdoor pool where the Big Dog ferry operates up to Geldeston lock which was our next destination.

The boys were fishing but grandaughter Grace wanted to join in. She didn't like touching the fish but was right at home with the maggots!

At the Locks Inn the bride and groom having their reception there wanted to be photographed next to the boat.

On Oulton Broad this is the only way to read your paper in peace and quiet.

On the hill at Somerleyton, one way to avoid the long climb!

Time to meet up and have a BBQ followed by a camp fire into the night.

East Coast Truckers Childrens Convoy 2011

Here's just a small selection of pics at the start of this years convoy from County Hall. As you can see, last minute polishing of the trucks, a driver briefing and excited children before the off. The Police bikes were there as usual although as you may know a question mark hangs over future convoys. The Lord Mayor and Sheriff, numerous other dignitaries and MP Chloe Smith all came to wave them off. A surprise for Sheri was a lift with Gerry King on his Goldwing. He brought her to Brundall roundabout where the Police bikes stopped the traffic for the convoy to pass through. Lead truck is Convoy Director Rob Billman.

Left, Mathew Francis at Old Buckenham airfield told me how they'd turned their fortunes around by encourageing non-aviation business to use their land and premises. The airfield was threatened with closure as finaces were so tight but this turnaround means that its future is more secure. They're getting the bar up and running seven days a week too so watch out for future public events to take place there.
I'm across country then to Swaffham where 'Advance Swaffham' action group show me how, six months since my last visit, their new orchard is coming along. Volunteer Mike Smith was showing Claudia one of the fruit trees whilst her mum, Kate Francis from the group, explained the progress they've made. There's another public event this Saturday evening and they're also hoping to get the old signal box back that stood on the site. Another excuse to return in the future!

Costessey Centre on Longwater Lane is the latest venue for Broadland District Council to have a recyle day for electrical goods. Take along what you don't want, their electricians will test for safety and carry out repairs then from 11am the public can come along and take what they want for free. It means that unwanted and repaired items are put back into use instead of into landfill. Pictured is Environmental Protection Manager Bob Wade. At the Bethel Street fire station they're preparing to leave after occupying the station there since 1934. Through the blitz and the burning down of the library just opposite this iconic building will be sold off. What will it become? Wednesday morning at 0730 they closed off the Fiveways roundabout on Earlham Road Norwich for resurfacing. The huge planing machine was brought in and unfolded its conveyor arm. Within minutes the surface was being removed to a depth of about 12cms. and the spoil fired into the lorry and taken away one after the other. Let's hope the new surface goes down just as quickly - but I don't think so. Impressive stuff nonetheless.

At Robertson Barracks Swanton Morley, 25 teenagers are experiencing the Army life for a week. Last night they were under canvass in battle conditions. Pic 2 are Cathryn Sharp, Charlie Blakely, Sgt.Major John Richmond and Cathryn's twin sister Zoe. All hope to make the Army their career except John of course who's already done pretty well for himself! The to more young people at Ormiston Victory Academy (formerly Costessey High) Emily Waters, Rebecca Mussett, Principal Rachel De Souza and Joshua Fiddy are about to reveal their GCSE results. Look at the expression on their faces then compare them with pic 4 after they've opened them. Rebecca got eleven A's. All are staying on to study further.

Friday at the Holt Youth Project. Since the many cuts that have been imposed recently, it's increased the interest in what Julie Alford has achieved here. Self help, community spirit and raising funds from the Lottersy and elsewhere, it's a great achievement and thriving. I met some of the young carers who use the facilty which has an IT suite, hairdressing, machine room, games and sports hall as well as a keep fit centre. Callum Wright (tallest in pic 3) has been going there since he was 11 and helped the NEAT group, went on courses and now has landed an apprenticeship all though the Centre. Getting older he now helps out as a volunteer to put back a little of what he's been given over the years.

Ipswich Maritime Festival Gallery

The East Norfolk Militia were delighted to be part of the first Ipswich Maritime Festival and fisrt thing Saturday morning we visited BBC Suffolk to talk about it on Rob Dungers Breakfast Show. (pic1) (pic2) Our girls - wives of the Regiment NOT camp followers as some person in the crowd had to be corrected in no uncertain terms!

During our displays we get a chance to talk to the crowds who're always interested to see and feel the weight of the musketts and we show them how they were loaded. We also had to keep the local pirates and smugglers in order. See later for the shooting!

Saturday night at 9pm we had all the re-enactors together for a mass muskett firing - 15 first firing one by one in sequence and then as a volley. What noise, what a flash and what a sight. Both days saw massive attendance. Our displays in the arena were always packed and we even got that famous sign from a Mr. Churchill who was just passing by through a time warp!

Unfortunately though, by Sunday the old smugglers were becoming a bit of a handful and had to be suppressed. Some took exception to this and we had to take matters into our own hands. Having killed one of our men, the perpetrator was brought to his knees and by a stroke of luck my muskett was the one that fired the fatal shot. With luck we'll be back next year to keep an eye on them. Meanwhile, I hope they sort out the one way system!!!

Dr. Will Bowden from the University of Nottingham has returned to Caistor St.Edmund for another archaelogical dig at the Roman site.

Vistors are welcome to watch from behind the barriers that surround the five separate trenches of the dig including the site of the forum in the centre of this walled town. They're here until September and already the earth has yielded more pottery and many oyster shells! Apparently the Romans liked their oysters.

Byfords Cafe Store and Posh B & B is one of five new entries in this years Good Food Guide in Norfolk. Owner Ian Wilson is delighted and found out when we made the call to congratulate him! I simply had to check out the premises. Described as 'quaint' it has many cosy places to dine within its Georgian walls and refurbishment has made it up to the minute when it comes to preparing the meals. They also have the store where they sell many chilled foods made to their own recipe. Recipe for success obviously.

Wednesday and we're talking expansion. Eric Kett (pic 1) at Thorpe St.Andrew doesn't believe we need to be building on the proposed sites next to Dussindale arguing that loss of the woodland there will add to the carbon in the atmosphere alongside destroying the habitat. Pic2. with David Allfry the County Councils Highway and Major Projects Manager looking at the Postwick interchange where plans have been put forward for the Postwick Hub - to connect the A47 to the planned Northern Distributor Road. Between that and the nearby Broadland Business Park, a new area designated as Broadland Gate, a mix of industrial/offices.

I was then called away to Roughton. Ironically, the NDR would have sped me on my way but in the nick of time I made it to report on the robbery that took place at approx.0320 this morning at the filling station and shop. The investigation was still underway and the forecourt taped off.

At Bawburgh this split level house on the hillside overlooking the Yare Valley was designed and built by June Farrow and her late husband. On her own now she's objecting to paying the council tax in full offering just £25. She appears in court today. Also this morning, the A-level results are out. Left to right, Erin (who's already got herself a job) Harriot, Head Rob Anthony, Sarah and Lily. None were overly thrilled by their results as they opened them on air.

East Winch RSPCA has taken custody of Mr.Asbo - the aggressive swan that terrorises people on the river Cam in Cambridge. He's settled down recouperating with two ladies (he's on the right) Look at his left foot and you'll see why they're caring for him until he's better.

Potter Heigham Country Fayre 2011

At last, after two years of showers the sun smiled down on the village hall field for this years Country Fayre at Potter Heigham. Crowds gathered around the arena. Ever year I've made my entrance on or in a different kind of transport from Evil Kneivils limo to my Lambretta. This year I had to drive a monster tractor between the bollards at the car park into the arena. Sheri chose her own transport, this event winning VW trike!

Robbie the shire horse was dressed up to the nines, the trike line-up was the biggest yet - they love coming here. The NICE society were out in force.

Winner for the best engine was Mr.Willets restored masterpiece. For vintage vehicles this restored caravan from the thirties started life on a holiday park in St.Osyth. As ever though, the attraction of the day was the sheep racing with some heavy betting on the Tote this year! The money raised today will be given to local charities at the village hall night of entertainment next March.

Training to relax!!

Our day on the trains began at Brundall. We knew the train was coming when they closed the crossing gates. From Norwich we then got the Wherry Line train to Sheringham. Grace couldn't understand why the train went backwards from Cromer. Hard to explain to a two year old!

When we got to Sheringham the Black Prince was just getting up steam. In fact, I've since been told by Mel the platform supervisor at Weybourne that it was J15 and NOT the Black Prince. The controls look simpler than the usual steam engine. We went to Holt pulled by the red engine (do you know the class?) They topped up the water tank before leaving us there. We looked around the station and shops and cafe then watched as the Black Prince arrived to take us back to Sheringham. You can't visit the seaside without having fish and chips then a drink at a seaview pub.
We visited the MO museum with all the old lifeboats and Grace loved the workmans toolshop. What did we de before power tools? From the watchtower we could see the fishing boats returning and so we went to the promenade where Grace could get a closer view as they hauled the boats across the beach.

There was a delay on the return train because of a signalling problem but as the weather was so nice it meant we just had to have another ice cream while we waited. A tired little girl slept most of the way to Norwich but by the time we'd boarded our last train home she was bright as a button again! I think someone wants a train set for Christmas - probably daddy!

NFU Mutual say agricultural crime in the UK cost nearly £50m in 2010. Pictured are left, Tony Bone from Farmwatch and Beeston farmer Hugh Scott who's been targetted a number of times already. Theft of diesel as well as valuable plant and power tools seem to be what the thieves are after and cause the farmer extra expense on sucurity.

Tuesday morning we're talking about the greenfield sites that might be used for housing developments after a shift in the planning laws. Looking out at the fields that separate Hethersett and Wymondham we discussed the issue with Yvonne Bendle. local councillor for Hingham and cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Localism at South Norfolk District Council. Then, to Breckland and at Thetford the public poll taling place tonight about the plans for a new bus station. A straw fire at Litcham had the fire brigade out in the early hours but they were letting it burn itself out by the time I arrived. So, to Dereham where butcher Stephen Barnetson told how he's selling up after 25 years serving the town. He's hoping that someone will buy it as a going concern. A serious assault on Prince of Wales Road outside Chicago rock cafe left a man with serious head injuries. Here the forensic team is examining the scene. The incident was at 0225am - at 0715 the police reopened the pavement outside the venue.

Militia At Hoveton Hall

The Victorian Extravaganza took place at Hoveton Hall and Gardens this wekkend and the East Norfolk Militia were camped out in the woods.

When we came to form up to march to the Hall we found we were short odf a drummer, so Wally volunteered (always secretly wanted to do that!).

After an inspection by Queen Victoria, we found the excaped prisoner and he was brought to justice - the firing squad!

Chaos this morning as traffic was turned off the A10 at West Winch and directed down the narrow Ractory Lane to rejoin the A47. A van went through a fence and struck a pole bringing down the power cable across the road. That's what took the time and the road was reopened by 0830 much to the relief of the queue who saw the policewoman take away the cones.

Glenn Road in Poringland has a power sub station where the wall seems to have been pulled apart brick by brick. Pic1. Strangley (although we can claim no credit) just as I finished broadcasting from there a lorry turned up and two workmen informed me that they were going to demolish it and rebuild it. Job done! Then to Cresta Lodge, a residential home which will be visited by some of the 6000 young Christians at the Costessey showground this week. They'll also be providing FREE car washes at the village hall 2.30 to 4pm all week AND a free Fete on Saturday. A real demonstration of caring for the community.

High up on Hillside Avenue at Thorpe St.Andrew are the ollotments overlooked by the hill on which stood the earliest church for this community. Andy Jarvis showed me the bee Hives set up through Broadland District Council. They've invited other parishes to see what they've done in the hope that they'll follow suit. Just down the road at Acle there's another community spirit. On August Bank Holiday Sunday there's a murder mystery for you to solve. Locals taking part in period costume of the early 20th century will be at their place of work to help you solve the clues as you look around the village. Pictured are organiser Laura Blackwell (left) and florist Rachel Barnard ( the flowerseller on the day). It was Laura's brother in Sardinia who came up with the idea. Auditions are tonight in the parish hall for those wanting to take an active part on the day.

Fewer young motorists are learning these days because of the cost involved. I met up with driving instructor Steve Thompson at Bowthorpe. Stats - average about 40-50 lessons cast around £1000, theory test £31, practical £62, licence £50 and then the insurance. He showed me the comparison figures for a 35 year old married man and an 18 year old single guy. The older driver will be paying about £750 to insure a car valued at about £1000. For the same car a single man might pay anything up to £5,500 A YEAR! Unbelievable.

The Britsih Touring Car Championship is at Snetterton race circuit this weekend so we took a sneaky look at the preparations. Left, Kevin Ritson showed me round and we spoke to Alice Powell who's racing the Formula Renault and Martin Byfor (right) who's in the Championship race.

So much activity on the last day of preparations. Here a Ginetta comes out into the morning sunshine. Centre, some of the drivers walking the track to get a feel for the new layout. Right, the track owner flies in over the top of the radio car!

Low pressure over the North Sea and an onshore wind kept the water in the Broads this weekend. It meant that we got caught on the wrong side of Beccles bridge!

Should've thought something was unusual when we came under Somerleyton bridge. 1. We just made it but the slightly higher hire craft coudn't and had to turn back. Sunday - we had the same predicament when approaching Beccles old bridge. Although it was low tide, the level was still too high for us to get under. We returned to Geldeston and Sheri stayed on board until Monday.

Sunday at the Locks Inn and the water was over the quay heading and path! Monday - and the levels were back to normal. We got home by 8pm.

Monday at Holt Country Park which has just won its seventh consecutive Green Flag award. 1. Paul Ingham countryside and parks manager for NNDC. 2. A view of the park. 3. Manor Park cricket ground where I met up with Norfolk coach and player Cris Brown to talk about the annual cricket festival currently being held at the Horsford ground.

The Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum is on the move from its premises at the former law courts up the hill into the Rotunda in the Castle Museum. Curator Kate Thaxton is looking forward to the greater footfall past her door but is desperate to find a home for the nine foot statue of two soldiers pictured here.

IT'S FREE to a good home. It's not stone but actual fabric that's been sprayed. It isn't waterproof however so needs to be indoors. It's nine feet high because they used to be called the Ninth Foot Regiment!

At North Creake I met up with Arborist Dan Yeomans from Tree Vista to talk about tree safety in light of the verdict over the Felbrigg estate incident. He was about to sart work on this beech tree beside the church and told me that an expert can soon tell just what needs to be done to make the tree safe and there are many signs that he can look for when making a diagnosis. If you're unsure call in an expert!

A year ago Bure Valley House sheltered housing was oposing planning permission for 8 flats for homeless people to be built on the adjacent car park of the Bure Valley Railway. Their petition and local support helped them defeat the plans and I went to revisit them. Report broadcast Tuesday morning.

Tuesday 19th July will be remembered as the day RAF Marham heard of its reprieve. The announcement was made in the commons on Monday. Joining us at the outside broadcast of the Breakfast Show left to right, Jill Bennett, Chris Goreham, Steve Martin producing. Chris with Derek Murphy from the County Council. Chris with Nick Daubney King's Lynn Council.

Wednesday at Necton Sports and Social Club where the team running it want to get younger people involved. However, the help isn't forthcoming and fundraising is difficult which all adds up to the death knell of the club if nothing changes by the end of the year. Pictured are treasurer Kim Woodbine, Chairman Jean Irwin who - after 28 years - says it's time to hand it over - and Drek Woodbine. The to the Hewitt School with associate head, Rob Anthony talking about the Aldridge Foundation which promotes business learning. In September a new develoment of 12 affordable eco homes will be let in Rackheath. Pictured is Peter Goodrick from Wherry Housing who showed us round. Solar panels, air recovery systems and even bath water tanks that flush the toilet will all help to keep down the bills. Rents will be about £80-100 a month. Meanwhile, disruption began on the A47 between the A140 and A11 junctions as high voltage power cables are replaced. They're 50 years old now and the work will take several weeks so if you use this stretch regularly you'll have experienced the contra-flow that means delay of around 20-25 minutes.

With Southern Cross going to the wall I went to see an independant care home owner, Tim Leadbeater who runs Sun Court in Sheringham. With almost two staff for every resident it's not cheap to provide a high level of care but in the face of harder economic times Tim syays that he and his wife just have to put in that extra effort to keep going. Private homes are managed differently to the large group businesses.

Ahead of ourselves today. On tomorrows breakfast show you can hear about the ongoing repairs on Finklegate connecting Ber Street with Queens Road where the house partly collapsed on Christmas eve. Still not done because of the insurers and neighbours who want to sell can't put theirs on the market with the road in that state. Also today (Wednesday) the wheelchair roundabout was delivered to the Toy Library refurbishment at the top of Grapes Hill/Chapelfield. A crane has to lift it into place within the courtyard of the building.

It seems that every year around this time, Unthank Road is closed for road works. 2011 no exception. Resurfacing is taking place with local shopkeepers seeing a drop of between 30-50% of their trade. It's due to reopen this weekend with the last of the works completed next Monday. Centre - Sam who runs 103 Deli Eatery and right, Robin Knell of Spurgeons butchers next door.

Aegel House in Aylsham is having a fund raising day Saturday to pay for day trips for the 27 residents. As it was, it turned out to be a very wet day but despite numbers being down the event stumped up £1086 thanks to local support. Pictured is the Manager, Elaine Stamp. Next to her, the Head Teacher at North Walsham Infant School and Nursery where they're usung chocolate buttons to play bingo. The parents also get involved and it's all to improve their maths skills. As you can see it's met with some enthusiasm.

Booze Cruise - July 2011

5. First stop - Pidou, the wine warehouse. Some prices have actually come down since last time!No you don't get much of that in the UK!

6. The coastal town of De Panne which just happened to be celebrating its centenary TODAY! Lots of street entertainment but we found this hillside oasis in the centre where we had our picnic lunch.

7. The town centre. Pedestrianised since my last visit a few years back.

9. The big trams with a service every five minutes.

10. Notice the street lamp. Underneath is not a CCTV camera. It's a small speaker. They play music throughout the centre of De Panne.

12. The vino. On the left, a Californian red which I've had before. Last time it was £1.90 a bottle. It's now £1.80! On the right, the Italian wine now being promoted over here reduced to £3.99 (half price). It's still on offer at Pidou for £11.00 - for a BOX OF SIX!!!

Whitlingham country sports park is the setting for an early morning boot camp using a trim trail from 7am for those workers who want to get fit. It's supervised by coach Dan Goodwin - far right. In one years time the Olympic torch will come through Norfolk but these schoolcgildren will get to do it for real with the torch used in the 1948 Olympics. The village of Honingham has been blighted by traffic since they put the new roundabout on the A47 at the Mattishall road junction. And as this traffic joins the roundabout before the main road and so a precedence, long queues have built up going towards Norwich at peak times. To delay this, new lights have been installed and we believe a new traffic control camera but Chairman of Honingham Parish council (who campaigned for the lights) says it's taking too long. Sarcastically he hoped they'd be on in time for Christmas! Highways say they should be commissioned soon and operating at peak morning times by July 19th.

What a great guy. Financial advisor Richard from Cringleford has time on his hands in the mornings so stands outside Castle Mall White Lion Street entrance and collects for chairty. At the moemnt it's Help For Heroes. His kids have practically disowned and he says he's a weeks holiday coming. He's told his wife he'll be spending most of that in costume collecting for the Air Ambulance. What a hero!

Wymondham High School is about to become an Academy. Head teacher Victoria Musgrave told us about the funding advantages and the fact that they'll be able to get rid of the old portacabin classrooms and raise the standards of the school.

Norwich Castle is where I met the Director of Norfolk's Museums, Vanessa Trevelyan to talk about ways of saving money. One possibility is to hand over control to a charitable trust which her team are looking at. It's been tried successfully in other parts of the country and Vanessa says there's no reason why anything should change as far as the customers are concerned. Norfolk at present has twelve museums.

Off to Cavell Primary & Nursery School at Lakenham where healthy eating means from @Grow To Grub'. Headteacher Simon Wakeman proudly showed me around their 'alotment' created from part of the playing field. A polytunnel and open raised beds where the children cultivate their own vegetables. This morning they were digging up potatoes and picking runner beans. Sweet corn, cabbage, lettuce and tomatoes are just a few more of the harvest to come including herbs and spices. A new chef takes over soon and the youngsters will be having school meals that they've grown themselves. A great learning process for children who, so often these days, don't even know where their food comes from.

Tracey's Newsagents on Rosary Road will be hit by Sundays demise of the News Of The World although she expects souvenir hunters to be in for extra copies and that the paper will soon have a successor. It was Saturday evening so the setting sun illuminated our activities at Swanton Abbott. A very receptive audience applauded loudly after we'd fired our musketts and demonstrated how the old flintlocks work. The smoke from the gunpowder was matched by Sheri who epitomised the lady of the day in 1805 when cigarettes weren't available but the old clay pipe was smoked by all!

Former Norwich City footballer Darren Eadie launches the Sellebrity website today which goes live on July 4th. As an ambassador for the Princes Trust he knows many celebs involved who have stuff at the back of the wardrobe they no longer want. Designer handbags, dresses etc. He's holding a leather jacket worth £3,500. Next to him, the wedding dress worn by Gail Platt in Coronation Street. All the monies raised will be distributed to various charities but he'll have to keep the pressure up on the celebrity world in oder to replenish stocks!

Monday afternoon it got so hot that Fudge the dog didn't know what to do with herself so Sheri gave her a bath. Still soaking, having had a good shake down, she was straight back on the sunlounger to continue where she left off. Daft dog!

The former Silver Rooms daycare centre in Norwich is undergoing a change as people are found alternative centres to use. A committee including Dr.Ian Gibson is hoping to lease the property from the County Council. Here, Julie Brociek-Coulton tells me of the plans which they hope will come to fruition in about a years time making it a Community Centre for all.

At the Norfolk Showground Helen McDermott discusses the programme details with producer David Webster who biked to the ground. Right, Kirsteen Thorne is first on-air medium wave at 9am. We're live at the Royal Norfolk Show until Thursday evening. Medium wave 855 & 873 KHz and during the day also on FM with selected programmes.

Wimbledon finals this weekend and probably a surge in people taking up the sport. At Wortham not far from Diss, the Tennis Club has over 300 members (almost the entire village!) Here coach Emily Wharton is supervising some of the senior players with club secretary Isobel Hunter.

1.Langley Staithe is a beautiful peaceful backwater off the River Yare. 2. The sunrise this morning was stunning shining right down the dyke. 3. Just next door is Langley Abbey, centuries old and now open to the public.

4. A greater crested grebe. 5. A mallard.

6. Fudge enjoys the fishing 7. I catch a real flying fish !! 8. a very convivial afternoon with our good friends (and neighbours!).

Fudge becomes Sludge (again)

For the second time this week Fudge has disgraced herself!
Monday resulted in a hosing down after a roll in a fresh cow pat - dirty dog. The smell lingered but she hasn't learnt anything. This morning she dived into a muddy ditch and covered herself again. Doesn't smell so bad but we're fast running out of shampoo. Definitely a case of SLUDGE the dog!!!

Simon Woodbridge of Canham's Hill Cemetery Ltd. propses to build a new site on the edge of Drayton/Hellesdon covering 80 acres. Broadland Councillors have been advised to reject the scheme because of planning rules but Mr.Woodbridge says Earlham Cemetery will soon be full. Plans include a green burial area in woodland alongside a chapel and parking for 120 cars. Locals object to the extra traffic and concerns over footpaths (some public) that run through the site.
THIS MORNING on the Early Show we were talking about the Postman's Park in London and one caller had been there only yesterday! Tucked in between Edward Street and Angel Street it commemorates ordinary people who've lost their lives trying to save others. Park Farm Hotel Hethersett was the venue this morning for a business breakfast hosted by Valerie Bullard, Director of Lively Crew to discuss how companies can continue to grow through the internet and in this climate. As ever, the concluding comment from chairman Mike Brown of Tri Logic was that, if a startup business can cope today then it should do well in a recovering market place.

Last time we met Marion Sutton and husband Alan at Saxlingham Nethergate she was strapped up waiting for a hip replacement. A call to her local MP Richard Bacon and to BBC Radio Norfolk resulted in a call from the hospital with an appointment for September. It's 15 years since Marion had the original replacement and she's nothing but trouble ever since. As you see, she's managing to use crutches for short spells but let's hope that the waiting and agony will soon be over.

It necessitated running a massive pipeline for half a mile in order to quench the fire at Stratton Strawless that began just after midnight Thursday morning. A vehicle scrapyard was completely destroyed and adjacent businesses damaged as over 50 firefighters tackled the blaze. By the early hours they were still damping down. The cause as yet has not been established.

Out And About in June

Springwatch over the last couple of years has come from Pensthorpe and we took grand-daughter Grace to meet the birds. A fabulous walk and they're so tame! If it's inclement there's the viewing gallery (pic1) shops and cafe. Some of the geese were a bit too friendly though!
Saturday in between the showers at Pleasurewood Hills. Billed originally in the 80's as an American theme park, it takes a day to do the full round. Grace loved the sea lions but when it came to the kiddies roundabout, grandad was the one who wanted it to stop!

As you may have seen on Look East Monday evening, the RSPCA Wildlife Rescue centre at East Winch has been inundated with ducks and ducklings. Some hosrrific stories about how they came to be there. Children throwing toys at them, stamping on ducklings and people even swerving to run them over. After recovery, Alison Charles and her team (left) set them free in the wild. If you want to see their premises they're only open to the public once every two years, the nxt time is Sunday July 10th.

Tuesday and the moon glowed bright red on the way in. Tomorrow evening there's an eclipse. Then, in the bins - at Marigold Close Horsford where Stephen Buxton has another refusal to empty his recycling bin. THEY claim there were nappies and glass in it. HE says only a wet wipe. With the government saying that fortnightly collections will not be replaced by the previous weekly ones, Stephen will either have to go to the tip or put excess in bin bags for next time. Finally to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital to meet up with Assistant Director of Nursing, Dawn Collins who tells me they're about to open a Carers Cafe where support groups and individuals can meet and chat over a coffee. It's a new initiative which has cost next to nothing to set up but the benefits could be great for individuals who're involved in this caring way.

Wednesday and another effect of the dry weather is the lack of good hay. Not just for horses but pigs too. Here at Spooner Row Trevor Cullun and his business partner have 5,000 pigs that need a fresh bed every day. Although alternatives like rape are providing some poorer quality straw, come the winter there'll be a real shortage pushing up prices which eventually will be reflected in the price of pork at the counter.

Thursday and car security with James Baldwin at NMG Suzuki Showroom on Mile Cross Lane. Improvements with key fobs and immobilisers have helped along with tracking devices. Norfolk stolen cars now below 1000 a year - a reduction of 25% on previous year.

At Edgefield Shrubbs Farm I'm with Zack Parsons who runs the place and Bob Wade Environmental Protection Manager for Broadland District Council who introced what's been dubbed "the slop bucket" to households who use bio-degradable bags to put their food waste into. Zack puts it into the processor (pic 2) which takes it up to 70 degrees and kills off all ther nasty bugs. Behind them you can see the next stage when it's covered with plastic sheet for 8 weeks before it becomes what you see in pic.3. The finished product after screening is in pic 4 when it goes onto his fields as compost. All this would have gone into landfill sites and across the country similar schemes are operating.

Holiday Monday and it's the tenth Fairy Fayre at Holt Hall. Abbie Panks (right) showed me round the grounds where something like three thousand visitors will come over the weekend to teach children about conservation (and have lots of fun) Even the pA is powered by a bike!

After 13 years at the helm of the Air Defence Radar Museaum, Doug Robb hands over the reins to Chris Morshead. Doug has been a great ambassador and I'm sure that this unique collection will continue to be an iconic Norfolk attraction. Meanwhile, at Blofield Heath, Janice Scott has just had solar panels fitted by Damien Bakers company RenEnergy for FREE! The deal is that any extra energy they provide will be sold back to the grid. All set for the land speed record for an ALL wood bike. Michael Thompson from Potter Heigham with the Splinter Bike. An amazing machine built in his worshop in the back garden. The rider will be ex triathlete James Tully and the attempt at the record will have to be made before September when the bike goes on show in the Victoria & Albert Museum.

From bike to trike and this old beauty has been refurbished by the Royal engineers at Swanton Morley ready for a 1500 mile trek across the Alps to raise awareness for Disability Motoring UK. Pictured are CE Graham Footer with Director of Policy & Campaigns Helen Dolphin at the driving helm. They're based in Ashwelthorpe and we had reports that there were wild peacocks roaming the village. Adrian heard we were at DMUK and came to escort me to his home where there were five peacocks strutting about. One neighbour, John told me that they're a nuisance but there's not much can be done about them.

Maternity week on the Breakfast Show and today I spoke to Jason & Amy Emons. Baby William came into the worl between floors - they were in the lift at the James Paget Hopspital when he arrived. Picture the peoples faces as the doors of the lift slid open!

Tracey Barker is the Team Leader of the Broadland Team of Community Midwives as we continue our week on the bReakfast Show. It's one of nine teams covering the county to provide home visits and a point of contact for mums-to-be.

A lovely morning to be in Sheringham. First, the toilet block on East Beach up for auction today. It went to a Cawston couple for £102,000 with permission to convert to a holiday let. It'll be interesting to see the end result. Then to West Beach to meet Hilary Nelson and Karl Read who're rightly proud that their efforts have helped regain the covetted Blue Flag award for a clean beach and water. All this following last weeks Crab & Lobster festival!

We rounded off maternity week by revisiting the N & N Delivery Suite. Left to right, Rosie Goodsell, Pam Sizer, Glynis Moore and Manager Jan Edwards. I also spoke to young mum Jenny who'd just given birth at 0425 to Kieron and they were going home at 9am!

A Light Snack for a sunny day

Long standing regular Phyllis from Ashby St.Mary was ninety last week and we joined her friends with a celebration lunch at the pub. When we got home we weren't really that hungry at tea-time but a light snack was called for. In such cases what you do is raid the fridge and cupboards to see what's available. This is what I came up with.

In a mixing bowl I put some diced garlic, celery, spring onion and a spoonful of Boursin soft cheese. To this I added a boiled egg, red peppercorns and just a touch of mayonnaise. Mix all the contents together.
Take one large tomato, slice off the top and remove all the seeds and centre of the fruit. Fill the large cavity with your prepared mixture and top off with black pepper. Taking a slice of the heart of a lettuce to make your base, add the filled tomato and the top which you can fill with mayonnaise. Drizzle a little olive oil over.
TIPS I always de-string the celery by running the knife edge down it before dicing. Makes it much more palatable. If you want a spicier filling add a couple of drops of Peri-Peri sauce or any handy chilli sauce.
RESULT a light summer snack that's filling but healthy and leaves a good aftertaste in the mouth which I always think is the test of a tasty dish.
