Every once in a while an old photo resurfaces from the past. This one from Brian Baylis.
Long time no see, but do you remember this when I say "Cheers!"? I took the photo and while I remember where, I don't the date.
It was in the eighties we do kmow that!

Radio Norfolk Photo Archive No. 16

Here's the photgraphic evidence as promised on the early show this morning. That's my pal Wilbur with me in our lederhosen when we were entertaining an audience in Koblenz early 90's. Obviously taken some years earlier on roller skates, this was one of a series of pics done for Radio 1.

Just realised that it's last August since I trawled through the archives for another pic. Then I stumbled upon this one. Taken a few weeks before BBC Radio Norfolk officially went on-air! It was also my first OB (Outside Broadcast). Clearly I'm on an open topped bus and you can see the radio car mast behind me. We were in Earlham Park on the outskirts of the City and this was my first live Sunday afternoon rock show from an event in the park. This would have been mid August 1980.

In the 80's we made an on-air bet that I couldn't get away with murder (so to speak)! I borrowed a Rolls Royce for a day and dressed as a chauffeur. A listener called Daphne agreed to dress in her best and I took her to various places. With free admission to a local Fete, we were afforded a parking space on the field and she was treated like royalty with the made-up name of Lady Kenninghall. We even got free ice cream from a shop that we drew up outside! Point proven?

Can you believe it, April 6th was the last time I delved into the archives. Just been so busy until now. This is Attleborough Carnival I believe in the 80's before H & S clamped down on such activities! Were you in the crowd or possibly the one bringing up the rear ???

We were talking last week about some of the trips we undertook in the 80's and 90's with Radio Norfolk listeners and someone mentioned the fishing trip that I went on in Fijji during our round-the-world journey. By the time we'd got there I'd just about recovered from the fishing trip in Cairns when the tops of my legs got burnt to the point that I was walking like someone with splits tied to their thighs! In Fijji there was no organised fishing so I had to organise one myself! These two guys run a glass bottom boat taking people out over the coral reef to view the little fishes. As you can see, I was after something bigger and caught these on lines wrapped round old cable drums and dropped 50 feet over the seaward side of the reef. I gave the fish to the locals !

During the 80's Radio Norfolk got involved in all sorts of adventures. Holidays abroad with up to 44 listeners, a hot air balloon with our logo and countless madcap public events. I took up banger racing against the emergency services. For three years Hainford Spares put a vehicle together for me to race at Great Yarmouth Stadium. I think this one was the first. In my second year I was placed last on the grid in a field of 42 cars and don't mind admitting that I'm proud to say that I came FIRST! This old Ford however didn't do so well and like almost all other bangers it was turned into one of those cubes of metal that you see on the back of scrap merchants trucks. Of course I got out of it first!

It's not long since this years Beaujolais Run but I've just located this one which is obviously from 1988 (look at the sticker!) Although everyone says it's not a race - IT WAS! Hurtling through France in dense fog only to find the **** French dockers were on strike again. The cargo ship we came across the channel in usually just carried lorries but we blagged our way on and had the best full English gutbuster and we got our wine home before most others!

Another Radio Norfolk holiday with Wilbur the hairdresser and this is Rosemary the hotel manager in Avignon, France. Her boss who owns the chain offered us a job in Monte Carlo for a six month season! I wonder where we'd both be now if we'd taken it? Instead I bought a dinner suit there which I Can still get into today!

Remember the Pop Quiz Final of Archive Photo No.3 (go to Blog history to view). One of the finalists, Philip Rundle found this news clipping which answers any remaining outstanding questions!

Just last week, when the weather was so bad, Becky Betts and the Sunday morning Treasure Quest team got the radio car mast frozen up. Ironically, it was at Taverham not far from the very spot that this pic was taken in the early 80's. That's me on the roof with local residents running our extension leads from their homes to power half a dozen hairdryers. The concentrated blast eventually thawed out the mast and let me continue on my way. As for Becky, a can of deicer was put to good use!

OK let's see what you make of this one! BBC Radio Norfolk has always been a tight-knit team but this one from about '81 gives it whole new meaning. Outside with the mike is Mike! Mike Souter with what looks like yours truly at the bottom and Nick Gardner on top. Nick left us for the bright lights many years ago, worked briefly on Newsround then moved on, married and I think he's a dad now too but does anyone know?
What was the event - well, my memory says it was at Busseys old showroom in Trowse and it was a challenge to see how many people we could get inside one of their new cars. Can't remember the model - just glad to get out alive!!

Does this stir any memories for you. Maybe you one of the hundreds of listeners who came on foreign holidays with BBC Radio Norfolk. Which one is me? As for the 'other' one? Do you remember Wilbur the hairdresser? Where was this taken and why were we dressed in lederhosen?

Here I am some time in the 80's when we had an ongoing Pop Quiz on the Sunday Afternoon Rock Show. This culminated in a live final. This pic was taken at "The Talk" on Oak Street in Norwich if I remember correctly (tell me if I'm wrong!). Is the man getting the big cup Glenn Hipperson ? I know that the guy on the far right of the pic is Philip Rundle who to this day texts and e-mails into the Early Show. Who's the guy and girl on the left of the pic? Mail me please wally.webb@bbc.co.uk
UPDATE Philip Rundle says the year was 1982. The winner was Glenn Hipperson, 2nd was a guy called Stephen (but what's his surname?) Third was Philip and the female is Sally (who?) Any further info to me please.

As I trawl through 28 years of memories, see if you can spot someone you know and identify what we're up to.

Wally's Radio Norfolk Archives

Here's the first of a long run of pictures from over the past 28 years. See what you make of this one and if you know anyone in the picture it would be great to hear from you (or them!)
Who's the little chap getting grilled in between Wally and WHO? Taken about 81/82 who's the other guy on stage (YES that is Wally with blonde hair) "It was a phase I went through."

RESULT - congratulations Cec Neale of Sutton and travel guru Russell Holding who correctly determined that it was Keith Chegwin with me on stage. It was a kind of yes/no game we played live on Saturday Superstore with Noel Edmonds back in the studio. That little chap is in his thirties now but I wonder if we'll ever find him. Is that YOU? ALSO added the other photo taken that day which gives a better view of Ceggers!
