Unusually, I woke 20 minutes before the alarm clock went off just after 2am. Mrs.Webb was obviously lying there looking for signs of life because as I stirred she whispered "Are you awake" to which came my usual reply of "No!" "Did you feel anything?" "No, but it can be arranged!" "About an hour ago, the bed was vibrating." I certainly wasn't aware of that accessory when I bought this waterbed. "What are you talking about?" "Something unusal happened around one-o-clock, it felt like the house was shaking." "Tell you what, give me twenty more minutes sleep and I'll find out when I get to the studio.
I found out before then whilst driving in listening to the callers on Up All Night, the show ahead of me. So, Mrs.W hadn't been imaginin' things. There really had been an earthquake.
In broadcasting terms it's actually exciting in these circumstances because you've every excuse for changing the show to reflect on the current circumstances. Thanks to all the callers in various stages of dress/undress work/home and their reaction to the tremors. Thankfully there was no loss of life we can only speculate how different it might have been if the event had occured during daylight hours!
